How Honeywell’s Automation Technology Sets It Apart in the UK’s Largest CCS Projects

Honeywell has been selected by Technip Energies to supply the automation and safety systems for the Net Zero Teesside Power (NZT Power) and Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) developments—two of the most advanced carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects in the United Kingdom. The choice reflects Honeywell’s position in high-reliability integrated control and safety technology, an area where few competitors offer comparable unified architectures at industrial scale.

Role in the World’s First Gas-Fired Plant with Full Carbon Capture
NZT Power is designed to become the world’s first gas-fired power station equipped end-to-end with carbon capture. The plant will provide more than 740 megawatts of dispatchable low-carbon electricity, enough for over one million UK homes. Honeywell’s Integrated Control and Safety Systems (ICSS) will support the operation of the facility by merging process control and safety layers into a single framework. This integration reduces system complexity, improves response times, and supports the high availability requirements that differentiate such next-generation power assets from conventional plants.

Enabling Large-Scale CO₂ Transport and Storage
The Northern Endurance Partnership project will move CO₂ captured from industrial sites across Teesside and the Humber—collectively known as the East Coast Cluster—to offshore storage beneath the North Sea. Honeywell’s technology will be embedded in the new onshore pipeline network and the subsurface saline aquifer infrastructure that form the backbone of the UK’s first dedicated CO₂ transportation and storage system. By centralizing automation and safety controls, the company provides a level of system standardization and operational oversight that is difficult to match in multi-site, multi-operator CCS networks.

Contribution to UK Decarbonization Goals
Both NZT Power and NEP are central components of the UK’s national decarbonization strategy and are expected to serve as models for future CCS rollouts. Their combined operation will capture and store millions of tonnes of CO₂ per year, significantly reducing emissions from heavy industry and power generation. Honeywell’s involvement supports the UK Government’s Clean Power 2030 objectives by supplying technologies already proven in high-hazard sectors and deployable at industrial scale.

Why Honeywell Stands Out in CCS Automation
Honeywell’s differentiation stems from its long-established expertise in integrated industrial automation, its ability to merge control and safety into a single architecture, and its large UK footprint of roughly 4,000 employees across more than 20 sites. Its role in NZT Power and NEP demonstrates how established automation suppliers with advanced digital capabilities are shaping the next generation of CCS infrastructure.
