MAHLE Responds to EU Proposal on CO₂ Fleet Regulation

MAHLE Group has welcomed the European Commission’s proposal to amend the CO₂ fleet regulation as an initial step toward climate protection but cautioned that the current approach falls short of unlocking the full potential of available technologies.

Arnd Franz, Chairman of the Management Board and CEO of the MAHLE Group, emphasized that while MAHLE supports climate protection through technological diversity, limiting CO₂ reductions from non-electric technologies to a maximum of 10 percent places innovation in a narrow niche. According to Franz, this restriction prevents the effective use of proven and emerging solutions such as hybrid powertrains, range extenders, and renewable fuels, all of which could make a significant contribution to emissions reduction and strengthen the European automotive industry in global competition.

Franz noted that the European Parliament and EU Member States now carry the responsibility of setting the right priorities to balance climate goals with economic stability and employment protection. He called for clear and pragmatic framework conditions that promote true technological diversity, rather than introducing additional complexity through new regulations and quotas that increase bureaucracy.

In addition to accelerating the rollout of e-mobility, Franz stressed the importance of enabling the broad deployment of alternative technologies and rapidly expanding the availability of sustainable fuels. He underlined that MAHLE is well positioned to contribute to this transition, with production-ready technologies available across all types of powertrains to support climate-friendly mobility in Europe.
