Wolong Expands Medium Voltage Motor Platform

Industrial sectors such as oil and gas, mining, petrochemical processing, and large-scale pumping systems continue to demand medium voltage motors capable of handling variable mounting conditions, vibration loads, and long operational lifecycles. In this context, Wolong Electric America expanded its Quantum™ platform with the introduction of the Quantum 500 Frame Medium Voltage Motor.
Structural redesign aimed at vibration control
The Quantum 500 was developed to replace an earlier motor design while maintaining compatibility with existing industrial installations. Wolong Electric America aligned the motor’s frame sizes, ratings, and mounting footprints with current industry standards to support drop-in replacement across existing systems and retrofit projects.
A major design focus was increasing structural rigidity to reduce resonance risks in industrial drive systems. The motor shifts its natural frequency at least 15 percent away from the operating range, helping limit vibration-related issues under different mounting conditions. This was achieved through higher frame and end-shield stiffness, a redesigned stator-to-frame interface, and a transition from a single-piece core structure to an interconnected multi-plate core design intended to improve support and vibration damping.
The updated mechanical structure also includes a larger shaft diameter, increased from 5.23 inches to 6.8 inches, along with reduced bearing center distances. These changes improve shaft stiffness and support operation on rigid foundations, flexible skids, and other mounting arrangements commonly found in API-driven industrial environments.
Designed for pumps, compressors, and process industries
The Quantum 500 targets applications including pumps, compressors, mining equipment, petrochemical systems, and gas compression infrastructure. Select frame sizes are available with deep flange configurations that support cantilever mounting for screw compressors and reciprocating compressor systems requiring footless motor arrangements.
The motor supports medium voltage operation below 7kV and is available in both WPI and WPII enclosure configurations. It also supports multiple pole configurations and a broad horsepower range for different industrial drive requirements.
Mechanical flexibility was another focus of the redesign. The motor operates bidirectionally, and the conduit box orientation can be changed in the field from F1 to F2 without requiring factory rework. This can reduce maintenance downtime and simplify installation adjustments during commissioning or servicing.
Bearing life and long-term operation
The bearing system was designed to align with industry guidelines, with calculated bearing life exceeding 100,000 operating hours. The insulation system is designed for an expected operational lifespan of up to 30 years under standard operating conditions.
Wolong Electric America stated that the Quantum 500 platform can also be customized for specific industrial applications while maintaining standard mounting interfaces and footprint compatibility across existing installations.
