Grid-Scale Battery Storage Integration for Power Transmission Systems
ACWA Power and the Saudi Power Procurement Company established three utility-scale storage facilities to stabilize digital infrastructure and regional electricity grids.

ACWA Power signed three Storage Services Agreements (SSAs) with the Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) to construct and operate utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS). The initiative deploys grid-connected energy storage assets across key electrical zones in Saudi Arabia to balance intermittent renewable generation and optimize load dispatch under a 15-year operational framework.
Operational Division and Commercial Structure
Under the agreement, SPPC acts as the principal offtaker and sole procurer of capacity, operating under the regulatory supervision of the Ministry of Energy. ACWA Power manages the engineering, asset delivery, and operational lifecycle of the storage plants. The commercial structure monetizes storage as a standalone grid service, establishing a repeatable procurement model for future grid balancing allocations.
System Parameters and Technical Specifications
The partnership covers three individual installations located at Haden and Muwayh in the western region, and AlKahfah in the northern region. Each standalone facility delivers:
- A rated output capacity of 500 MW
- A total storage volume of 2,000 MWh
- A sustained discharge duration of four hours at full nominal capacity
The combined deployment provides 1,500 MW and 6,000 MWh of active grid support. At the systems level, these BESS units absorb surplus generation during peak production cycles and discharge active power directly into high-voltage transmission networks during high-demand intervals, limiting curtailment and stabilizing grid frequency.
Strategic Grid Integration and Use Cases
The deployment targets high-voltage grid support, dynamic frequency regulation, and capacity shifting. Integrating large-scale battery assets mitigates transmission congestion between renewable generation zones and industrial load centers.
Omar Al Hassan, CEO – Saudi Arabia at Acwa, stated: "Energy storage systems has become an essential part of how the Kingdom is developing its power system, rather than simply an addition that comes after renewable energy projects are in place. These plants will hold energy generated through the day and release it when demand reaches its peak. We are delivering them in close step with the Ministry of Energy and the Saudi Power Procurement Company."
The projects expand ACWA Power's operating portfolio of grid-scale storage, building on utility deployments such as the 770 MWh system paired with 200 MW solar capacity at Tashkent Riverside, and the 1,227 MWh off-grid network at the Red Sea Project. The installations provide measurable operational reserves to accommodate the national diversification of generation assets.
