EDAX Releases New APEX Software for EDS and EBSD
EDAX, a leader in X-ray microanalysis and electron diffraction instrumentation, has introduced the latest version of its APEX software for integrated Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS)-Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) applications. APEX 2.0 gives users the ability to collect and analyze simultaneous EDS and EBSD data.
“With the inclusion of EBSD, the APEX platform now allows users to characterize both the compositional and structural characteristics of their samples,” said EDAX EBSD Product Manager, Matt Nowell. “APEX EBSD provides users the ability to collect and index EBSD patterns as well as collect EBSD maps.”
Both the APEX EDS and APEX EBSD Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) are easy-to-use and provide powerful analytical capabilities. APEX uses a visual Ribbon Bar for quick access to the most commonly used functions. The bar is organized by tabs, icons, and text to help users identify specific functions.
The APEX software GUI is completely customizable. It allows users to arrange windows and views to their liking. These customized layouts can be saved for use at any time. The software also provides several layout templates, giving users the ability to change the color scheme of the GUI to reduce eye fatigue or match the user interface to the Scanning Electron Microscope.
APEX EBSD utilizes EDAX’s time-tested and proven Triplet Indexing engine to determine the crystallographic orientation and phase from an EBSD pattern. It also includes a robust Hough Transform to detect the bands from a range of materials and determine sample quality. Triplet Indexing provides a patented Confidence Index value, which measures the reliability of the automated indexing routine and helps users evaluate the performance of the system on a given EBSD pattern or EBSD scan.
APEX EBSD further provides new reporting capabilities based on the Template functionality within the EDAX OIM Analysis software. The templates allow users to define an analysis recipe and specify exact maps, charts, and plots to generate reports that can be applied to any scan collected with APEX EBSD. Templates can be used for both single scans, as well as multiple scans using the Batch Scan feature.
