China’s Wuhan Iron and Steel Group (WISCO), one of the largest companies in the nation’s steel sector, has built a new transshipment port to better handle growing quantities of imported ore arriving in the East China Sea. The port consists of several berths and yards where 15 million tons of ore per year can be unloaded from huge ocean-going vessels. Various bulk handling machinery installed throughout the port by three different OEMs has one thing in common: in all of these super-size loaders, unloaders, and stacker-reclaimers, a total of over 170 geared motors supplied by German manufacturer NORD DRIVESYSTEMS ensure everything stays reliably in motion.
STROS, the largest manufacturer of construction hoists in the Czech Republic, supplies customers all over the world. Three systems ship per week. Eight of the high-rises at “Moscow City”, a major construction project in Russia, are being built or have already been completed with STROS hoists. The hoists reach heights of 300 m or more and have to withstand wind speeds of up to 20 m/s. Safety is therefore fundamental. STROS has been working with NORD DRIVESYSTEMS as its single-source drive supplier for more than 15 years.
Permanently full speed? Not such a good idea for pump drives! Speed control balanced to actual requirements greatly enhances the energy efficiency of pump systems. NORD DRIVESYSTEMS supplies complete pre-assembled distributed drive units for a wide performance range to 22 kW. In addition to energy savings of up to 60%, users benefit from reduced noise emissions, low wear, and increased plant service life as well as the ecological advantages.
EKATO, manufacturer of customized industrial agitators, has scaled up the largest model from its UNIMIX line to more than double the size, thereby implementing the largest discontinuous toothpaste production system in the world. Two mixers, each with 10,000 liters effective volume, produce 6,000 to 11,000 kg of toothpaste per hour, depending on the product concentration. Thus, the output has been more than tripled. The drive specialist NORD DRIVESYSTEMS supported the development of the new record-sized systems.
TMCI Padovan supplied to a known italian producer of flavoured drinks an award-winning Dynamos machine provided with NORD gearmotors. The machine is targeted to the final processing of the grounds resulting from the cross flow filtration of vermouth-base wines and from clarifications with decolorizing carbon.
The metropolis London is currently adding a new East-West rapid transit connection with a length of more than 100 km to its much-frequented public transport network. For this major project, 21 km of new tunnels are being bored in the city center alone. The soil here mainly consists of soft clay with a sticky consistency that makes the transport of excavated material especially challenging. H+E Logistik and NORD DRIVESYSTEMS, two German industry specialists, are supplying suitable conveying technology including geared motors.
NORD DRIVESYSTEMS designs individual, low-maintenance drive solutions for baggage handling systems. The international manufacturer has already equipped numerous airports throughout the world in locations as varied as Hamburg, London, Johannesburg, or Taipei. The drive expert’s dedicated internet portal – http://airport.nord.com/ – provides a concise presentation of solutions for the industry.
NORD DRIVESYSTEMS presents a new motor-mounted starter with an extended performance range for the economic distributed implementation of soft start and reversing functions, for motors from 0.25 to 7.5 kW. The compact SK 135E integrates motor overload protection through PTC thermistor monitoring, mains and motor phase failure monitoring, I²t monitoring, and magnetizing current monitoring. The electronic, wear-free switching technology replaces motor circuit breakers, reversing contactors, and brake rectifiers, thus rendering entire control cabinets unnecessary in large facilities. As PTC thermistor connection cables and brake control cables are not required, either, installation becomes generally more cost-effective, space-saving, and faster. When the drives are ordered complete and wired with gearbox, motor, and starter, any assembly effort is reduced to simply tightening the screws and establishing the electrical connection, which is optionally with plugs.
Bargteheide – NORD DRIVESYSTEMS introduces new smooth-surface motors for high-hygiene applications. The three-phase induction motors without cooling fins are especially well-suited for applications in the food and beverage industry, since they are easier to clean than finned motors. Manufactured from aluminum, the motors can be finished with the nsd tupH surface treatment for a corrosion protection level similar to that of stainless steel drives and without the danger of flaking that occurs with coatings. The NORD-developed treatment is compliant with FDA Title 21 CFR 175.300 requirements. Non-ventilated and ventilated variants with ingress protection of at least IP66 are available, initially in sizes 80, 90, and 100 with motor power output from 0.37 to 2.2 kW. Efficiency levels corresponding to IE2 or higher ensure resource-friendly operation. Brakes and full thermal motor protection (bimetal temperature sensor or thermistor temperature sensor) can be optionally ordered in addition to incremental encoders. The smooth surfaces enable rapid and easy cleaning and are thus ideal for hygienic solutions, especially in combination with washdown gearboxes from NORD. The new motors are fully compatible with the entire NORD drive program, supporting and ensuring high versatility for efficient drive configuration.
Complementing the SK 200E line of frequency inverters, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS introduces the SK 180E which is mounted on asynchronous motors, just like its larger counterparts. Featuring proven ISD vector control, the SK 180E is even more cost-effective than the currently available range of decentralized units. The new inverter focuses on the core requirements of speed control and efficiency. Featuring two analog inputs and integrated process and PI controller functions, it can autonomously manage simple drive applications. It is suitable both for stand-alone variable frequency drives and for synchronized operation with several units. A typical example of the latter: distributed horizontal conveying applications requiring no positioning or encoder feedback, no special safety functions or braking resistors, and with motor power outputs from 0.25 to 2.2 kW.
