Temperature Controlled Automated Grocery Lockers Implementation

Morrison Supermarkets and retail technology specialist StrongPoint have partnered to deploy automated, temperature-controlled grocery collection lockers at the Morrisons store in Skipton, North Yorkshire. The implementation introduces an automated self-service fulfillment architecture to the supermarket sector, transitioning online order collection from manual curbside vehicle delivery to asynchronous customer pickup.

Operational Challenge and Cooperative Architecture
Retail grocery fulfillment requires balancing variable customer arrival windows with precise cold chain logistics. Manual click-and-collect fulfillment models require dedicated parking bays, customer check-in protocols, and store staff to transport loose items to waiting vehicles.

To streamline this process, Morrisons integrated StrongPoint temperature-controlled locker hardware with a voice communication interface developed by VoCoVo. StrongPoint provides the compartmentalized mechanical infrastructure and allocation control logic, while VoCoVo supplies wireless team communication systems to handle real-time customer assistance and age-restricted product verification.

Technical Parameters and Thermal Zoning
The locker system incorporates independent thermal compartments to preserve inventory integrity across multiple product categories:
  • Chilled compartments: Actively maintained at 3°C to 5°C.
  • Frozen compartments: Regulated between -18°C and -20°C.
  • Ambient units: Regulated at 16°C.
Hardware capacity accommodates orders ranging from daily replenishment to full weekly orders. Standard ambient compartments hold up to three paper bags, while thermal units hold one to two bags. For cross-category fulfillment, the system software associates a single order with multiple compartment doors managed under a unified six-digit retrieval code.

System Integration and Workflow Execution
Orders are pre-picked and packed directly into paper bags before placement into assigned compartments prior to customer arrival. Upon reaching the terminal, the customer enters the assigned six-digit code to release the corresponding compartment doors.

Security and regulatory verification protocols run through integrated store communications. When an order contains age-restricted items, the control system keeps the specific compartment locked while transmitting an alert directly to staff headsets across the local VoCoVo wireless network. Store personnel verify customer identification on-site under Challenge 25 standards before triggering door release. A physical terminal help interface also initiates real-time, two-way audio directly to staff headsets for hardware assistance.

Operational Results and Capacity Impact
Direct locker collection eliminates dedicated parking bay wait times and removes manual vehicle handovers. At the Skipton site, automated order staging allows all online orders to route through the automated interface, enabling same-day order processing and extending customer collection availability by two operating hours per day.
