Murata High Output FORTELION Battery Module Equipped with Lithium-Ion Secondary Battery
Murata Manufacturing Co., Ltd. has developed the MH1701, a FORTELION high-output battery module that is ideal for industrial equipment requiring high output such as uninterruptible power supply (UPS) devices and instantaneous voltage drop compensators, and plans to begin mass production in August.
This module is equipped with “FORTELION,” Murata’s proprietary lithium-ion secondary battery, which uses olivine-type lithium iron phosphate as the cathode material and combines long life with an exceptionally high level of safety.
In recent years, in keeping with the progress of IoT (the Internet of Things), the use of electronic control devices has grown and a more stable power supply is required than before at data centers and factories where precision equipment is manufactured. Accordingly, operators of such facilities have expanded their use of UPS and Ancillary Service in the interests of ensuring stable power supplies in the event of power outages. Conventionally, these devices are equipped with lead-acid batteries, but in view of issues such as short battery life, there is an increasing need to replace them with lithium-ion secondary batteries which feature longer battery life as well as space-saving and weight-saving capabilities.
In response to these needs, Murata has developed this high output battery module that features FORTELION’s sophisticated input-output characteristics, a high level of safety, and longer battery life.
Highlights
Safe storage batteries
Thanks to the stable crystalline structure made possible by employing olivine-type lithium iron phosphate as the cathode material, FORTELION is less vulnerable to breakage and less likely to catch fire, even if subjected to a large impact or significant pressure, and maintains a reliable battery performance even under intense workloads. FORTELION has received the Japanese safety standard for the emergency power systems “Emergency Power Supply Certification” and has its safety has been recognized in a test report based on the UL9540A international safety standard for storage battery fire risk in the US.
Longer life than conventional lead-acid or lithium-ion secondary batteries
This product equipped with FORTELION is capable of undergoing 15,000 charge-discharge cycles. FORTELION provides a much longer expected operating life than lead-acid batteries that typically require replacement after around 500 cycles or regular lithium-ion secondary batteries that are capable of 2,000 to 3,000 cycles, thereby contributing to reducing LCC (life cycle cost).
Continuous discharge at up to 200A (6C)
The optimized secondary battery module structure and circuit design make possible continuous discharge from SOC 100% to 0% at 200A. This allows a greater power output than the previous product,*1 providing more appropriate solutions for short-time backup use or instantaneous voltage drop protection systems.
*1 Compared with Murata’s previous model IJ1201M
Major Applications
- UPS (uninterruptible power supply)
- Instantaneous voltage drop compensators
- Ancillary services (short-period frequency regulation) *2
*2 Special operational services to maintain the quality of electricity
Summary of Specifications
Murata will continue to develop secondary batteries and modules to meet the market’s needs and contribute to realizing a safe, secure, natural disaster-resistant sustainable society through these technologies and solutions.
