GF Machining Solutions continues partnership with KSF with delivery of Mikron MILL S system

With the needs of the medical industry in mind, GF Machining Solutions has delivered a specially adapted Mikron MILL S 400 U to KSF in Tuttlingen, Germany. This machine is equipped with a supercritical CO2 cooling system from Fusion Coolant Systems (Michigan, USA).

The Fusion Coolant Pure-Cut® system, integrated in the MILL S and delivering CO2 through the center of the spindle, eliminates the need for traditional cutting fluids while dramatically increasing the speed and efficiency of milling hard materials such as titanium or stainless steel.

The technology provides significant gains in machining productivity while also reducing the costs and risks associated with product washing, especially in the area of medical device manufacturing. KSF is located in Tuttlingen, Germany, the heart of Europe's medical device industry, and part of Hochschule Fortwangen University, one of Germany’s leading teaching and research universities for Medical Engineering.

KSF has a staff of PhD and Master's students that work on both fundamental research and projects sponsored by industry. The competence center has successfully developed many new manufacturing processes used in the medical device industry and will carry out process development research on this system for industry as well as academia. GF Machining Solutions has already supplied them with an AgieCharmilles LASER P 400 U Femto Flexipulse machine in March.

GF Machining Solutions Medical Segment Manager, Erik Poulsen, commented: "The Mikron MILL S is the perfect choice for this type of research – it is already used by dozens of major medical device manufacturers who value its precision, thermal stability and excellent dynamic performance. It is also a real pleasure to see this system installed and working at KSF – we feel that their unique ability to develop new processes will help our medical customers to realize the full benefits of both the Mikron MILL S and Fusion Coolant's supercritical CO2 technologies."
