Training Concepts with Augmented Reality and 3d
We all know the problem – schooling is boring, keeping information is difficult and learning is exhausting.
And as soon as school is over, the same monotonous training is waiting for you in the professional world. Though, this doesn’t have to be the case. Thanks to the latest technologies, Augmented Reality software makes it possible to transmit information in an innovative, interesting and inspiring way. Who would decline a training in which processes can be explored and performed with AR? This kind of learning is not only very inspiring, but also extremely effective. When studying, we can’t save all information – only a small fraction of what we perceive is then stored in our memory and can be recalled. This represents a great challenge for the field of education and training. It must be ensured by different approaches that the transmitted contents remain in the memory of the learner.
By simply listening, as is the case in most training courses, only 20% of what is heard is retained. Seeing a context allows the student to remember up to 30%. A combination of seeing and hearing leads to a 50% probability that a person will remember what they learned afterwards.
By performing a process or working with objects and processes yourself, up to 90% of information are stored in our memory. Active learning is therefore much more effective than passive learning. It has also been proven that information associated with emotions remains in the memory much better. When AR is used, enthusiasm is generated even in training situations, which increases understanding and receptiveness.
When training is not efficient, time and money are wasted. In the worst case, training can have no positive impact at all. For this reason, companies should offer training courses using Augmented and Mixed Reality. The benefits are great. Employees can be trained much more easily, efficiently and cost-effectively.
Optimal learning for all types of learners through Augmented Reality
In order to better understand the process of learning in different people, a distinction is made between three different types of learners: the visual, the auditory-communicative and the haptic-motoric type. Each of these types of students is addressed through different ways of transmitting information and can absorb and retain information better through different media.
The visual learning type mainly needs information in image, text or video form, which he can view and comprehend himself. Training that is purely about listening is not ideal for this type of student. However, for the auditory-communicative learning type, a typical school situation might be very appealing, in which people can speak and communicate.
The haptic-motoric learning type is often neglected, although many people have characteristics of this category. These people retain information best when they are connected with movements or, for example, when they can grab objects and examine them thoroughly.
When looking at the different types of students, it quickly becomes clear that all these very different types cannot be considered in conventional teaching and training. The usual form of training with seminars or lectures concentrates only on a small range of learning types, whereby a large part of people is not addressed and learns ineffectively or not at all.
So, how can all participants of a training course who have different intelligences be addressed effectively and optimally so that the training is as efficient as possible and the knowledge is retained long-term after the learning unit?
Augmented Reality offers the solution here. All four types of students can be covered by AR. The visual learníng type can learn better by displaying processes as animations, images or videos. The sound recordings and communication, which can take place via AR systems, are used specifically to address the auditory-communicative learning type.
The possible interaction with AR models is particularly advantageous for the haptic-motoric learning type. The displayed objects can be moved, navigated or turned around. The personnel can therefore be better prepared for new machines that are integrated into production in training courses. Learning content can be transferred quickly, efficiently and practically from any location without the need for any machine components.
An AR device such as data glasses, tablets or smartphones is not always necessary for the use of Augmented Reality. VISCOPIC’s new 3D technology is a solution for the representation of contents for the training of employees. The object to be handled is recognized by object tracking and provided with information via a beamer. This means that no additional devices are required and the data can be projected directly into the real world.
AR and 3D in theoretical training
Augmented Reality and 3D have very high potential to improve teaching and learning and to realize innovative learning scenarios. In the theoretical training, processes can be represented and explained in an interesting way with the help of AR, VR and MR.
The most different types of learners can be addressed in class and thus taught in the most effective way. The practice, which follows the theory, can be optimally prepared only by the previous theoretical learning of important procedures at a realistic illustration of the real situation.
AR and 3D in practical trainings
Augmented Reality is especially valuable in practical trainings. The problem with conventional trainings without Augmented Reality is that real exercise objects cannot be brought into the classroom. Up to now, specialist knowledge has been imparted through PowerPoint presentations and exercises on real points. This makes practical training in the necessary technical depth difficult and time-consuming.
The latest technologies allow processes to be carried out directly on models and illustrations, without the need for real components or materials. Even use cases, which in reality are rarely available for training, can be presented in Mixed Reality trainings. The following example shows the practical advantages of AR, VR and MR training.
Augmented Reality trainings at Deutsche Bahn
One example of the use of AR in training is a cooperation project between VISCOPIC and Deutsche Bahn. For technicians working on switches, a training course was developed which contains Augmented Reality. This makes it possible to perform work on normally invisible components.
By using Augmented Reality these single parts can be shown clearly – thus defective parts can be recognized, repair steps can be shown and results can be controlled. Maintenance staff are trained to carry out complex procedures. Thanks to the use of AR data glasses, there is no need to provide vehicles for practice. Certain situations, which otherwise happen only rarely and are therefore not available for training, can be tested very realistically.
The enormous potential that Augmented Reality has in the field of training should not be ignored. The use of AR in the classroom will be more the rule than an exception in the future due to its advantages. Then higher success rates can be achieved in courses and training can be deployed efficiently. However, the creation of content for AR applications has often been very cost- and time-intensive and hardly feasible without programming knowledge.
The startup VISCOPIC provides a solution for this problem with one of its software products. With the VISCOPIC Pins application, AR content can be created quickly and easily without special prior knowledge. In the AR editor, different work steps and checklists can be created in the form of so-called “pins”, which are attached to a virtual object – such as a 3D CAD model of a product.
These can be enriched with information such as images, videos, sound, speech or 3D animations. AR glasses, such as the Microsoft HoloLens, can be used to open the work steps saved as a file and project them onto the real environment. The pins are displayed at exactly the point on the product where they were previously placed on the virtual object.
