IMA Schelling has equipped the tried-and-tested edge banding machine with its new control system, taking automated edge banding to a whole new level of convenience.
The Novimat Contour R3 provides furniture manufacturers, store fitters and suppliers with a compact edge banding machine for processing reel material. The aimi.DO machine control system and industrial processing units with powerful motors deliver user-friendliness together with peak performance.
The fully-fledged multi-profile equipment allows automatic switching between up to four edge profiles – for example between three radii and a chamfer. This means that the user benefits from fully automatic set-up processes thanks to automation of all the relevant components. A manual infeed table and the customary spraying device for high-quality finishing complement the package.
First-class edge banding with minimal glue joint
The edge banding unit delivers top performance and top quality in equal measure. Thanks to an IR heater, 6-reel magazine and PUR pre-melter, high-quality edge banding is possible with a small glue joint. A servo knife precision-cuts the edging material at the trailing edge. The capping unit is equipped with a linear drive for unbeatable dynamics and flexibility with minimal wear. The efficiency of the overall concept is further enhanced by the manual edge thickness measuring device, which directly transfers measured values to the machine control system for edge management.
The latest generation profile milling and profile drawing units are used for fine finishing, whereby they have been redesigned to further optimise the processing quality. High-precision linear guides, automatic adjustments with absolute value encoders and top pressure decoupling are just some of the features used throughout.
"We have equipped the Novimat Contour R3 with a quality package for edge finishing," enthuses Dennis Reddig, Edge Processing Product Manager. "This includes the CRU 20 corner rounding unit for high-quality corner finishing at operating speeds of up to 25 m/min, a profile scraper with multi-profile technology and dual blades for a very high finish quality, a flat scraper and a 4-motor buffing unit."

Control system with new intuitive user interface
In addition, the graphical, intuitive user interface of the aimi.DO control system makes operating the plant easier and more convenient. The software solution from IMA Schelling, which can also be used across machine fleets, enables program call-up by means of a hand-held scanner as well as a program change when the machine is occupied, therefore further increasing production process flexibility. An order list can be created with the control system and the user can quickly select between the "series" or "batch size 1" operating modes. The integrated function for machine data collection (MDC) ensures transparent processes and enables visualisation of the machine including the workpieces. Data import, feedback and networking with other machines take place via the aimi.TALK interface.
