ACWA Power to develop solar and wind projects in Syria

The Ministry of Energy of the Syrian Arab Republic and ACWA Power, the world’s largest private water desalination company, a leader in the global energy transition, and a first mover in green hydrogen, announced the signing of a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) to study develop approximately 2.5 GW of solar and wind capacity — alongside energy storage and a proposed national technical training centre — in the Syrian Arab Republic.

The agreement establishes a framework to perform detailed technical and commercial studies on existing power plants and the national grid, and to evaluate, develop, and implement a pipeline of power projects, including renewable energy generation and energy storage.

The agreement was signed at the headquarters of the Syrian Ministry of Energy, in the presence of H.E. Eng. Mohammad Al-Bashir, Minister of Energy of the Syrian Arab Republic, Mohammad Abunayyan, Founder and Chairman of ACWA Power, as well as representatives from the Saudi Ministry of Energy.

Under the agreement, ACWA Power will work with the ministry of energy in Syria to identify suitable locations for the contemplated projects — targeting the development of approximately 1.0 GW of photovoltaic (PV) capacity and approximately 1.5 GW of wind capacity — with potential grid-scale storage solutions to enhance system reliability and flexibility.

ACWA Power will also conduct a study on establishing a national technical training centre capable of graduating professional technicians who are prepared to work on approved projects across both construction and operations.
